After Onward, Pixar's Next Movie Will Go In Search Of The Soul

We only just recently got the first trailer for Pixar's next movie, the suburban fantasy movie Onward. However, 2020 is a strange year for Pixar Animation Studios. Not only do they have two movies set to release, but those two movies are only coming out about three months apart. The second film is scheduled for release exactly one year from today, and so Pixar has given us our first bit of information about what the film actually is.

The Pixar Twitter account has officially unveiled the movie Soul. based on the description, the story will be delving deep into the very concepts of life itself. Check out the description below.

While the description is pretty vague, the idea that the movie will be exploring some of the most important questions of life itself makes it clear that the title Soul is referring to spiritual concept of the soul, that there's something more to life than simply the physical manifestations of our bodies. These are some pretty heavy philosophical questions, but if there's any studio that has shown a deft at dealing with some pretty deep concepts, it's Pixar.

The movie will apparently take place in both New York City and in "cosmic realms." The idea that the soul might exist in some tangible form in a cosmic realm someplace makes the movie sound a little like Inside Out, the Pixar movie that turned emotions into actual characters. However, we know that none of the movies currently on Pixar's schedule are sequels, and so while there might be (or might not be) similarities between the two ideas, they are not directly related.

The other reason that Soul might be a "spiritual" sequel to Inside Out is that the two movies have the same director, Soul is being helmed by Inside Out director, and new Pixar studio head, Pete Docter. Docter also directed Up and Monsters Inc.

Beyond these details, nothing else has been revealed about Soul. We don't know who the voice cast is or anything about the characters that cast will be bringing to life.

The good news is that we'll probably get a few answers before too long. The first trailer for Onward, Pixar's next movie after Toy Story 4 drops on Friday, launched less than a month ago, and that movie is nine months away as of now. This means we're probably only a couple months away from learning more about Soul. There's going to be a bit of juggling to do as marketing for both of these movies will be happening pretty close together. We'll probably get our first look at Soul before we learn much more about Onward.

However, since Pixar is almost universally great at what they do, that's a good thing. I don't think we'd be seeing two movies from the studio coming this close together if there wasn't confidence that both were ready. While 2021 will see a single untitled Pixar movie released, in 2022 we'll go back to a schedule that looks like this, with one movie coming out in March and another set for June.

Fantastic Four Director Just Keeps Trashing His Movie

Sometimes a reboot manages to successfully bring a superhero back onto the big screen and portray them in a new light while still staying true to the source material. And then theres Fantastic Four, which was a critical and commercial bomb to the point that it killed 20th Century Foxs future plans for this iteration of Marvels First Family. Four years after Fantastic Fours release, director Josh Trank has no issue with trashing his own movie, as evidenced by this latest tweet.

This past weekend saw the release of Jordan Peeles Us, and like many moviegoers, Josh Trank decided to check it out. Unlike most moviegoers, though, Trank has a movie that was not well-received by the public, and evidently the passage of time has allowed him to poke fun at his time helming Fantastic Four, as hes quite comfortable declaring on Twitter that Us is the complete opposite of his 2015 movie. Thats not saying much, although Us has indeed been met with critical acclaim and made over $174 million worldwide so far. If you have a choice of watching one of these two movies, its pretty clear which one you should pick.

This comment follows a couple of weeks after Josh Trank responded hold my beer to a tweet declaring that no superhero movie fails. It is true that for the most part nowadays, superhero movies are usually at least commercially successful, with a good portion of them also doing well among critics. Fantastic Four was not one of those movies, and while much of the blame was placed at Tranks feet for its poor performance, the director wrote in a tweet deleted shortly thereafter that the final cut of the movie was not the one hed planned on giving to audiences, indicating studio interference. In any case, Trank appears to have made peace with Fantastic Four and doesn't have a problem making fun of himself for it, though it doesnt sound like we should expect more self-deprecating comments from him anytime soon.

Originally the plan was for Fantastic Four to kick off a new film series, with the sequel coming out in June 2017. However, following the movies disappointing performance, Fantastic Four 2 was later removed from the calendar and eventually cancelled. While Fargo showrunner Noah Hawley has been working on a Doctor Doom movie, with Fox now under the Disney banner, its unclear if that project will still move forward or if Marvel will put its own Fantastic Four movie into development that better fits within the Marvel Cinematic Universe mythology. As for Josh Trank, his next movie is Fonzo, which stars Tom Hardy as Al Capone as he wrestles with dementia following his stint in prison.

A Lot Of Netflix Users Have Streamed Murder Mystery With Adam Sandler And Jennifer Aniston

Adam Sandler has been making a lot of movies for Netflix over the last few years. Based on the views his latest effort has received, it's clear why Netflix is happy to keep the actor around. People apparently really love his work. According to Netflix, nearly 31 million accounts in North America viewed the new movie Murder Mystery over its first three days this past weekend, which is an opening weekend record for the streaming service.

The number released by Netflix on Twitter is 30,869,863 accounts. 13,374,914 of those accounts were based in the US, with the balance coming from Canada, so apparently it's Canada that really loved Adam Sandler, or maybe Jennifer Aniston, or maybe murder mystery comedies. It's not clear.

Netflix doesn't release viewership numbers on a regular basis and there's no data to back up the numbers, so things should be taken with a grain of salt. We only hear the numbers from Netflix when they're really good, and nothing is said if the numbers are less than stellar. Having said that, what attempts are made to back up Netflix numbers usually bear them out, so there's no reason to believe these numbers aren't accurate, or at least somewhere in the ball park.

If 31 million people each spent $9 on a movie ticket, then Murder Mystery would have had a stronger weekend by far than any other film had this past week. Of course, it's not exactly the same thing. There's no guarantee nearly as many people would have gone to a theater to see Murder Mystery. The power of the "Play" button is strong, and the fact that millions who were already Netflix subscribers simply had to tap a button surely went a long way in getting record numbers of people to watch the movie.

I reviewed Murder Mystery and I was utterly unimpressed by it. Having said that, I've seen a lot of comments on social media from people who thought the movie was funny, or at the very least thought it was a pleasant distraction, so clearly a lot of people at the very least didn't feel like the movie was a waste of time.

I'm not sure anybody was expecting a new cinema classic. At the end of the day, the goal of original programming is simply to convince current subscribers that they need to keep their subscription, while also convincing others that they need to subscribe. Murder Mystery may not be a movie that drives people to sign up if they haven't already, but combined with everything else that you need Netflix to see, it might push some over the edge.

It will be interesting to see if Murder Mystery continues to rake in the views. If Netflix tells us that it did, then it will be because the movie has continued to be strong. If Netflix starts to get quiet on the topic then I suppose that means that viewership has fallen off.
